pretty city, paris 2012: bright encounter, in nouvelle athens

skies were grim in paris on the morning i took to the streets of the 9th arrondissement.

then i encountered this young family, holding hands while walking
la rue.

believe it or not, the sun broke through--if only for a few minutes--shortly after they let me make a photo...

art seen: dan flavin at the morgan library & museum

dan flavin
untitled (in honor of harold joachim), 3. (1977).
at the morgan library, march 9, 2012

i had the clare eddy thaw gallery --- and this groovy dan flavin scultpure-- all to myself for many minutes on friday night. i was so excited, i took a few photos (and was sharply reprimanded afterwards. though, i didn't know i wasn't allowed).

it's a fun, entrancing piece. the lights seemed to change as i held my gaze -- it was especially true when i watched it through the camera. some colors grew bolder, then the intensity shifted. did it truly change or was it a trick of the eye? i don't know, but i liked it.

the sculpture will likely be up for the duration of the excellent "dan flavin: drawing" exhibition, which runs through july 1.

fashion week 2011: splashes

i decided to check out the fashion week scene up at lincoln center this morning.

a fashion journalist at the times had been complaining that this fashion week was feeling more subdued, more corporate, less spirited than previous events at bryant park and other venues around town.

i can't refute or deny that assertion--not based on an hour or so, on a sunday morning.

but i do think that the new and improved lincoln center is very photographer friendly--you're free to roam around the expansive josie robinson plaza (though i did see a couple of people stumble nastily up and down the grand stair, so it's not without treachery) or set yourself up along the gangplanks (catwalks) that attendees, after decamping on columbus avenue, tend to traverse on their way to the main stage. if you're intrepid, there is better opportunity here than you could hope for.

there were many photographers, including the one and only bill cunningham, and many fashion blogger types (including the sartorialist and his famous photographer galpal, whose name escapes me at this moment)

bill cunningham...

scott schuman (a.k.a. the sartorialist). that girl is psyched that he took her photo...

like i said, i didn't stay very long. but here's a little of what i saw and liked. splashes of color and pattern:

love the red (though i find it as hard to photograph as white) and his pink socks...

mixed signals

she's mixing color AND pattern

i love her outfit, sunday casual but cool

can you see her blue eyeliner?

red shoes. love. her friend looks good in blue, too.

i like a lot of what is going on here, in theory.

the lana turner headband sort of works for her.

photo(shop) shots: anthropologie

i don't shop for clothes at anthropologie (not really) but i enjoy an occasional walk-through, the mise en scene (mise en shoppe?): a jangle of color and pattern, varied light, inventive materials, "charm" in every nook. never thought to take photos until yesterday, but i was in the mood to play with color...these are for my sister.
