read a good poem: today (and happy spring)

the first day of spring, 2012.
nyc

***

Today

If ever there were a spring day so perfect,
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze

that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house

and unlatch the door to the canary's cage,
indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,

a day when the cool brick paths
and the garden bursting with peonies

seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like taking

a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,

releasing the inhabitants
from their snow-covered cottage

so they could walk out,
holding hands and squinting

into this larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day.

see a fine picture: "comfort"

that life could be capable of small beauties...
--colum mccann, "let the great world spin"
(is that line --on p20--gonna be the only one i remember from the whole book?)

paris postcard: market scene, montparnasse

on wednesdays and saturdays, the narrow island that divides boulevard edgar quinet in montparnasse hosts a market where neighborhood folk can purchase gorgeous, locally grown fruits and vegetables and flowers. the meats are plump and tempting...

i'll take a quick spin through tomorrow for cherries (cerises!), before heading to roland garros, but here are a few shots from last week:

the flower district, in winter

a visit on a summer morning to the flower district can be almost dizzying, with traffic and trucks slamming and bamming, loading and unloading flowers, from tiny potted posies nestled in shallow crates to long sturdy-stemmed sunflowers wrapped in brown kraft paper. grand tropical varieties mix with pretty, but unnameable, local ones. there are pink, yellow, red and green bouquets everywhere.

in the wintertime, the sights and sounds are more muted. a tray or two of tulips remind you that spring is on the way. but it's mostly buds and vines and branches, looking lonely, but still lovely.

cherry blossom buds

i think my sister would like these vines...

red ginger

tender pussy willows are everywhere...

i fell in love with this beautiful bunch. then realized they are fake.
