read a good poem: gloss of the past

there is such a terrific tyranny of pink in the city these days, but this bough in madison square park might be my favorite...

haiku: time of joy

celebrating spring with some new york state plum blossoms ...

TIME OF JOY
(after Buson)

Spring means plum blossoms
and spotless new kimonos
for holiday whores.

read a good poem: today (and happy spring)

the first day of spring, 2012.

Today

If ever there were a spring day so perfect,
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze

that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house

and unlatch the door to the canary's cage,
indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,

a day when the cool brick paths
and the garden bursting with peonies

seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like taking

a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,

releasing the inhabitants
from their snow-covered cottage

so they could walk out,
holding hands and squinting

into this larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day.

Green is happening.
Through the sweet expectant chill
Of a northern spring
We have gone without will,

Without fear, without reason,
Trusting to the power
Of a fickle season,
Of a passionate hour,

To mature, to sustain
Till the plan uncovers
In the sun and rain.
Early lovers

Never question much
What is quietly beating
Through the music and the touch
And the mouths meeting.
